A concealed powder-coated steel base holds the bottom of each timber post up off the concrete, so standing water and snowmelt are not soaking into the end grain. It is a small detail that does a lot for how long the posts last, and it keeps the base looking clean.

Both work. A freestanding pergola can go anywhere in the yard — over a patio, a hot tub or an outdoor kitchen. An attached pergola is common over a back patio or a walkway, but the attachment has to be flashed properly into the existing wall, which is where most retrofit pergolas eventually leak.

An open timber pergola will not — it is built for shade and open sky. If staying dry matters more, a solid-roof pavilion or patio cover is the better structure, and we build both.
